Retire in Dumaguete and explore and experience Negros Oriental Province, the little city where you’ll always want to be.  Dumaguete is fun, full of culture, and is a laid-back city at the foot of Cuernos del Negros or Mount Talinis, a potentially active volcano known as “The Land of the Gentle Men.” It is a popular place for expatriates and also famous for being home to Silliman University, one of the Philippines’ largest and oldest educational institutions, as a university town.

Dumaguete, the City of Dumaguete, is officially a 3rd tier city and the capital of Negros Oriental, Philippines. It has a population of 131,377. It is the capital and most populous Negros Oriental province city in the Philippines.

Dumaguete is referred to as a university town due to four universities and many other colleges where the province’s students converge to enroll for tertiary education. RETIRE IN DUMAGUETE

Besides being a bustling city, there are some reasons why you should consider retiring in Dumaguete, Philippines.

Visit Nature in Dumaguete

Parks, palm groves are abundant, and the natural beauty is enchanting. The province (Negros Oriental) and the large island (Negros) are lush and green, with abundant sugar cane fields and pineapple groves.

Inexpensive life to retire in Dumaguete

Philippine life isn’t as inexpensive as you would imagine, and certainly more costly than Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam. Yet living in Dumaguete, where rent can be $200 USD a month or less, is still cheap.

Dumaguete Philippines is just big enough

Dumaguete has plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and things to do, like a central mall (Lee Plaza) and the Robinson Mall of modern times. Dumaguete is home to a Silliman University associated medical center and a new hospital under construction.

Health care and retirement in Dumaguete Philippines

It’s easy to live a healthy lifestyle in Dumaguete, with so much nature, sports and recreation, and a low-stress vibe. Dumaguete has plenty of locally grown fruit, enough vegetables, freshly caught fish, and seafood filling its restaurants, public markets, and stands, unlike the artery-clogging diet you’ll find in many parts of the Philippines.

Retire in Dumaguete to a clean and safe little city

I assume Dumaguete is safer and more environmentally friendly than many other areas in the Philippines. The streets are a bit wider and better maintained; you’ll see more flowers, gardens, and greenery; people litter less and sweep more, and the clean country air is refreshing (when the fields aren’t burnt).

Dumaguete is very secure too. Even though I have no official figures, you can be walking and cycling everywhere, even at night, and never had a problem. You have to be vigilant everywhere you go in the world, of course, but it feels secure even in the crowded public market or downtown, and violent crime is practically non-existent.
